 Forklift Masts Dayton - Dayton (population 166,000) is a city in the state of Ohio, United States, and the county seat of Montgomery County. The city of Dayton sits in the Miami Valley region of Ohio, north of Cincinnati. With a Metropolitan Statistical Area population of 841,502 (2010 census), Dayton is the 4th largest metropolitan area within the state of Ohio. The Dayton-Springfield-Greenville Combined Statistical Area is the 43rd biggest combined statistical area within the US with a population of 1,072,891 (2010 census).
The city claims to be the birthplace of aviation because Dayton was the home to the inventors of powered flight, who were Orville and Wilbur Wright. Dayton has many industrial, research and aerospace businesses which have been able to produce lots of technical innovations. The city of Dayton is occasionally called the "Gem City," a moniker derived from a newspaper article that dated 1845 that noted the city's wealth, refinement and enterprise. Dayton's nearby metropolitan area includes Beavercreek, Centerville, Kettering, Vandalia and Trotwwod. Dayton City is still a "gem", with its many restaurants, shops, spacious parks, sports facilities, lively arts community, places of historical value and a thriving downtown district.
Dayton's thriving cultural scene consists of dance, theater, visual arts and music. The city has built a reputation as a destination for entertainment and culture due to organizations like the Dayton ballet and the Dayton Art Institute. Dayton City boasts some arts centers like the Benjamin and Marina Schuster Performing Arts Center, the Brookville Community Theater, the Dayton Art Institute and the Dayton Cultural Center. CITYFOLK is a local organization that produces ethnic and traditional dance and music events. Culture Works is a development organization which provides support through community funding to the arts in Dayton.
The biggest employer in Dayton City is the research and development department of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which hires many Daytonians. The city of Dayton has been able draw amongst the nation's highest concentrations of aerospace/high-technology companies because of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. A large number of scientists, engineers, specialists and technicians find work at these businesses. The U.S. Defense Department Joint Logistics Systems Center employs a lot of private sector staff so as to deal with the installation of computer systems. The state of Ohio is working to make the city of Dayton a leading center for UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) research and manufacturing.
The economy of Dayton has started to diversify lately to currently consist of education, healthcare, legal and insurance. The Greater Dayton area hospitals contribute substantially to the local economy and are a major employer in the region. The region's Miami Valley Research Park, the site of government and corporate research firms, is another important source of work.
