 Forklift Masts New Haven - New Haven (population 129,779) is a city in Connecticut. It is situated on the northern shore of Long Island Sound within the county of New haven. The city of New Haven has grown by approximately 5 percent since 2000, more than nearly all cities in New England. It is probably best known as the home of Yale University, an institution that has been important to the city's economy. Yale is the biggest employer of New Haven.
New Haven is the second-biggest city within Connecticut. It is part of the Greater New Haven metropolitan area, which has a total population of over half a million.
New Haven was built on the "Nine Square Plan," a four-by-four grid planned by the English puritans who founded the town during 1638. The original blocks are considered a National Historic Planning Landmark. The central common block is New Haven Green, that forms the center of downtown New Haven. The city of New Haven is sometimes referred to as "The Elm City" due to numerous trees planted there in the first public tree planting program within the US.
The city of New Haven has a healthy, diversified economy. Biotechnology, hospitals, professional services, financial services, and retail trade help to form its economic base. Over half of the economy is based on financial services, healthcare and education. Reaserach and development organizations and high-technology companies are attracted by Yale Medical School and Yale University. The burgeoning bio-technology sector gets its boost mainly from local healthcare, Yale Medical School and pharmaceutical companies.
Manufacturing forms roughly 9 percent of the economic base. Everything from watches to airplane parts are produced in the region. New Haven is the largest wholesale distribution center in Connecticut. New Haven's major employment sectors are health services and education; trade, transportation and utilities; business and professional services; manufacturing; government; hospitality and leisure; and finance.
Greater New Haven is home to three Fortune 1000 companies: the head offices of The Knights of Columbus are within New Haven, Amphenol is based within Wallingford and Hubbell, the electrical equipment producer is based in Orange.
