 Forklift Masts Savannah - Savannah is a city in the state of Georgia. It serves as the county seat of Chatham County. The former colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and former state capital of Georgia is today a thriving industrial center and an essential seaport. The city of Savannah is the 4th largest city within Georgia State and part of the 3rd biggest metropolitan area.
The city of Savannah is a famous location for people to go to. Millions visit the city every year, mainly to see the historic architecture. There are many historic buildings, like the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the South's first public museums, and the country's oldest standing antebellum rail facility. The First African Baptist Church has among the oldest African American Baptist congregation within the United States. The historic home of Juliette Gordon Low, who established of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, is also within the city.
The city's recorded history dates as far back as the year 1733. British General James Oglethorpe led an expedition and landed along the Savannah River. Oglethorpe and Tomochichi, the local Yamacraw Indian chief, developed a friendship, that paved the way for the serene settlement of Savannah. The 120 settlers on the ship established the colony of Georgia, that was named in honor of King George II of England. As the colony's first city, Savannah represented a fresh start for the poor emigrants from England. Its objective was to strengthen the colonies by fostering trade. The fertile soil and mild weather of the area resulted in a major industry of rice and cotton. But it was the cotton gin invention which boosted the city's fortunes. The city became a thriving commercial port.
During The Civil War, Savannah endured an economic hardship and a protracted blockage, ending in capture by Union forces. The city bounced back during post-war reconstruction and the cotton industry once again caused the city to flourish. Nevertheless, the devastating infestation of boll weevils and the Great Depression brought Savannah down once more. Savannah was able to recoup after WWII the second World War.
The military, manufacturing and tourism are important contributors to Savannah's economy. As one of the biggest container ports within the United States, the Port of Savannah contributes greatly to the economy. Transportation in general is an important sector. A lot of local residents are employed in the diverse manufacturing sector, which includes over 250 manufacturing facilities within the area. One of the city's largest businesses is International Paper. Another is Gulfstream Aerospace, that manufactures private jets. The North American head office of JCB, amongst the largest construction equipment manufacturers in the world, is situated within the city of Savannah.
The area's military continues to have a strong presence, hiring a lot of individuals at both Fort Stewart and the Hunter Army Airfield.
