New York City is home of the New York Stock Exchange, the largest stock exchange within the world by dollar volume. Many major companies have their headquarters here. The city of New York played an important role in the development of the country as the gateway for immigration to the U.S.
Upstate New York has a concentration of manufacturing businesses which produce garments, printed products, furs, railroad equipment and bus line vehicles. Nanotechnology and microchip manufacturing takes place within Hudson Valley and Albany. Manufacture of photographic equipment and imaging happens within the Rochester area. various products of New York State consist of scientific instruments, electric equipment, machinery and chemical products. New York State is a major agricultural producer generating over $3 billion in agricultural products from farmland which covers roughly one quarter of its total land area. Major products include cattle and other livestock, dairy, vegetables, nursery stock, maple syrup and apples. No other state produces as much cabbage as New York state.
New York's economy is bigger compared to most independent nations, ranking 16th behind Turkey as the biggest economy in the globe. $46,364 is the average per capita income.
During 2007, the state's exports totaled more than $71.1 billion. The main exports were foodstuffs, computers and electronics, minerals, commodities, cut diamonds and auto parts. Other than Canada, its biggest markets for exports are Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Israel.
