 Forklift Masts Clovis - The city of Clovis, New Mexico is located within the eastern portion of the state. It is located within Curry County where it also serves as the county seat. It is the major city within the Clovis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city of Clovis is an agricultural community located on the mesa called Llano Estacado, within the eastern part of New Mexico State. Cannon Air Force Base is located there. The city of Clovis is also noted for its part in early rock music history.
During prehistoric times, the peoples of the Clovis culture inhabited the eastern New Mexico region. Several anthropologically significant remains have been located at the Blackwater Draw site located south of the city, near Portales. Visitors are welcome to visit this historical site.
Clovis was truly established back in the year 1906, when several Santa Fe Railroad engineers selected this site for a townsite. It was named "Santa Fe Railroad." The station master's daughter renamed it Clovis after the first Catholic king of the Franks.
The whole region of east-central New Mexico and west Texas is dominated by ranching and agriculture. Peanut production, cotton farming and cattle ranching are main industries. The Clovis area has a number of processing plants for agricultural products, like the Southwest Cheese Company plant which processes milk from local dairies. Located between the city of Clovis and Portales, the plant opened in 2005 and provides work to more than 200 area residents. This big plant processes into cheese more than 2.3 billion pounds of milk each and every year.
A large number of jobs are found in the services sector, with Allsup's convenience store head office as the biggest employer. The local Wal-Mart and Dillard's stores, together with smaller national and regional supermarket chains, provide many residents with work. Rail transport and operations have a lesser but still essential impact on the economy of Clovis. The city's business and financial needs are met by institutions such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and regional financial institutions.
The Cannon Air Force Base is under constant threat of being closed down. Then again, the Committee of Fifty, a local lobby group, has been established to try and keep the base operational within the city. Their efforts resulted in a realignment of Cannon as a special operations base.
