Forklift Masts Portsmouth

Forklift Masts Portsmouth - Portsmouth is situated within the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia and had a population of around 95,535 as of the 2010 census.

The Norfolk Naval Shipyard within Portsmouth is a historic U.S. Navy facility which is often called the Norfolk Navy Yard. The facility is based within the city of Portsmouth and not within Norfolk as the name suggests. The name "Norfolk" was chosen in order to avoid confusion with the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This is where a naval shipyard existed before when the Virginia facility first opened. The shipyard rebuilds, remodels and repairs all kinds of Navy ships.

The city sits along the Elizabeth River, precisely across from Norfolk. The city of Portsmouth offers many miles of waterfront land and is part of the Hampton Roads harbor. Between Olde Towne Portsmouth and Downtown Norfolk, there is a ferry boat which brings riders to and from across the water.

The city of Portsmouth was established by a shipbuilder named John Wood who saw the location as a great site to build ships. He petitioned King James I of England for a land grant and soon after, the neighboring area was settled as a plantation community.

In the year 1752, Portsmouth was established as a township by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on behalf of Col. William Crawford. He was a wealthy merchant and a ship owner who dedicated the 4 corners of Court and High streets for a church, a market, a jail and a courthouse. The town was named for Portsmouth England. The region known as Old Towne features one of the biggest collections of historically important residences between Charleston, Virginia, Alexandria and South Carolina. The AME or also referred to as Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church is located in Olde Town and was built by lots of slaves and free men. It is the oldest African American church in Portsmouth and the second oldest building within the city of Portsmouth.

The Pass House is a historic building within Portsmouth, built in 1841 by Judge James Murdaugh. There are several other historic buildings in the city that were occupied by Union troops from the year 1862 until the year 1865. Regulations by federal forces required residents of the city to get a written pass to travel across the Elizabeth River and locations beyond. These passes were issued from the English basement and that is the way the name "Pass House" came about.

Portsmouth has a rich history as a port township. The Olde Towne Business and Historical District is found within the downtown region and there has been a combination of conservation and redevelopment underway there. Like for instance, the Hawthorn Hotel and Suites, located at the Governor Dinwiddie Hotel, was shut down for over ten years prior to being reopened in 2005 after being renovated and reopened. This building has been recognized by the Historic Hotels of America. This is a program of the National Trust for Historical Preservation that identifies hotels which maintained their historical architecture, integrity and ambiance. The society also offers resources for their preservation.
