Forklift Masts Edmond

Forklift Masts Edmond - Edmond, Oklahoma is located in the central part of the state. It is part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, situated within the county of Oklahoma. It is the sixth largest city in the state of Oklahoma.

The city sits along Oklahoma City's northern border. Downtown Oklahoma City is easily accessible from the city of Edmond through Interstate 35 and US Route 77. Citylink Edmond bus service provides public transportation to the city of Oklahoma.

The site was chosen as a coaling and water station for steam engines on the Santa Fe rail line. The Santa Fe Railroad extended into Indian Territory in the year 1887. The site was considered ideal due to its high elevation, which allowed trains to easily accelerate downhill when departing the station in either direction. The station was named after the freight agent Edmond Burdick. When early settlers arrived, they decided to name the township Edmond. At present the BNSF freight line runs through the same course which the old Santa Fe rail used to take.

In the great Oklahoma land run in the year 1889, the township of Edmond was able to blossom around the homesteads staked around the Santa Fe station. The population of the city was around 394, by the year 1890. A syndicate known as the Seminole Town and Development Company prepared the original planning map for Edmond and named the streets after employees and other men connected with the Santa Fe Railroad and the township syndicate. The very first officers of the city and mayor were elected in the month of May the year 1889.

Outside the U.S. Post Office in downtown Edmond stands a memorial to the victims of a tragic event within Edmond's history. Edmond made national news during August the year 1986 when it was the location of the post office massacre. An ex-postal employee named Patrick Sherrill killed 14 people and wounded 6. The crime triggered a rash of postal employee murder-suicides all over the country.

Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller, winner of 7 medals in 1992 and the year 1996, is from Edmond. Miller is America's most decorated Olympic gymnast. The Shannon Miller Parkway has been named to honor her. It is situated on Interstate 35 from the Memorial Road exit to the Logan/Oklahoma County line.
