The city was initially a ranching and farming community. However, the economy of Midland underwent a massive transformation when oil was discovered within the Permian Basin during 1923.

There are several attractions located close to or within Midland, including the Midland County Museum, Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, Museum of the Southwest Complex, Big Spring State Park and the Confederate Air Force and American Airpower Heritage Museum.

Additionally, there are several fascinating museums with a thorough account of the history of the region, like for instance the Midland County Historical Museum and the Museum of the Southwest. There is also the American Airpower Heritage Museum, that houses more than 50,000 artifacts from World War II. World class shopping is offered at The Midland Park Shopping Centre.

Located within Midland is the management and administrative head office for the oil and gas industry of the Permian Basin, that is the largest oil producing region in the state of Texas. The energy industry of the United States is mainly influenced by the Permian Basin.
