The area has moved passed its roots as a major steel producer and heavy manufacturing to include substantial business and professional opportunities into its more diversified economy. Ten Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered here. Popular companies consist of H.J. Heinz, Mellon Financial and Dick's Sporting Goods. United States Steel is the largest company with headquarters in the area.

Major industries consist of biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, retail, medicine and high technology.

There are several parks and recreational areas in the city. The Raccoon State Park is a huge city park featuring boating, water sports and fishing on Racoon Lake, as well as hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and cycling. Point State Park, located at the actual point of convergence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, is called simply as "the Point." Excellent downhill skiing opportunities are available close by in Blue Knob, Seven Springs and Hidden Valley. Situated within the Laurel Mountains at a height of almost 3000 feet, Seven Springs is Pennsylvania's largest ski area comprising 17 slopes.

Outside of Pittsburgh's downtown core can be found various cultural, educational and medical institutions, such as Carnegie Museum and Library, the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
