The city is located within the Southeastern United States along the Cumberland River. Nashville has earned its status as a music industry center. The City of Nashville was established in 1779 by a group of Wataugans, frontier settlers who created their own autonomous government. It was initially called Fort Nashborough in honor of Francis Nash, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. The City of Nashville quickly grew in importance because of its port on the river, and later its accessibility via railway. Nashville was incorporated as a city during the year 1806 and became the county seat. In the year 1843 it was named state capital.
The city's cultural life benefits from the extensive university community. The university community has been very influential not only within Nashville, but nationally. The Agrarians and the fugitives were two groups of poets and literary scholars who were associated with Vanderbilt University during the early 20th century and had a significant effect on culture.
Another vital industry within the City of Nashville is the tourism industry, particularly with Nashville's history in the Civil War. Two popular attractions comprise Fort Negley, which is a Civil War battle fort that has been semi-restored and Fort Nashborough, a reconstruction based on the original settlement. Nashville is the site of a full-scale replica of the Greek Parthenon. Historic architecture includes The Hermitage, an historic presidential home open to the public and the Tennessee State capitol buildings.
Nashville is referred to as "Music City" and is well-known for its music scene. The Tennessee Performing Arts Center is a main place in the city. Cultural organizations include the Tennessee Repertory Theater, the Nashville Opera, the Nashville Ballet, and the Music City Drum and Bugle Corps. The symphony is headquartered within the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.
