This combined location had a population of 2,464,866 in the year 2007 and this ranked as the 22nd most heavily populated MSA in the United States. In 2007, the projected population of the Metropolitan Denver Area was recorded as 2,998,878.

Aurora was first known as the township of Fletcher and was inhabited in the 1880s. The area was named after Donald Fletcher, a Denver businessman who saw the land as having excellent real estate potential. Together with his partners, Fletcher staked out four square miles east of Denver. The town and the state of Colorado itself struggled through difficulties after the Silver Crash which occurred in 1893.

After hard economic times fell on the area, Fletcher decided to flee the town and unfortunately, the community was left with a big water debt. During 1907, the inhabitants of Aurora chose to rename the town Aurora. The name was selected after one of the subdivisions in the township. Gradually, the place began to grow behind the city of Denver until it became the fastest growing city within the United States during the latter part of the 70s and early part of the 1980s. Aurora is made up of many subdivisions and still proudly carries the name of one of its original development plots.

Aurora is spread out over 1800 acres or 7.3km2 of developed park land. It has an additional 6000 acres or 24km2 of open space and natural areas preserved. The city is home to 7 award winning golf courses; Fitzsimons, Centre Hills Par 3, Saddle Rock, Aurora Hills, Springhill, Murphy Creek and Meadow Hills. There are numerous golf courses that are privately owned within the city as well like; Valley Country Club, Common Ground Golf Course, Blackstone Country Club, Heritage Eagle Bend Golf and Country Club, Heather Ridge Country Club and John F. Kennedy Golf Course.

The Jewell Wetland is a 200,000m2 or 50 acre wooded wetland that features a boardwalk, a butterfly garden and deck access into the wetlands and many trails. The Star K Ranch is home to the city's Morrison Nature Centre and this offers valuable habitat for wildlife. It provides access to the Sand Creek Greenway Trail and offers many trails to explore nature. The Quincy Reservoir and the Aurora Reservoir offer many fun opportunities for water recreation.
