 Forklift Masts Pueblo - Pueblo (population 106,595) is a Home Rule Municipality within Colorado State. It serves as the county seat of Pueblo County. Pueblo is located at the confluence of Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River. The city of Pueblo is the primary city of the Pueblo Metropolitan Statistical Area and a significant part of the Front Range Urban Corridor. Denver lies 166 km towards the north of Pueblo.
Pueblo is situated in a region considered to be part of the "banana belt" and a semi-arid desert. The average annual precipitation is approximately 305 mm. The city of Pueblo experiences less snowfall than other major cities within the state of Colorado.
Because of the city's major steel-producing sector, the city of Pueblo has been dubbed the "Steel City". The steel sector in the city is the largest in the country.
In the mid-19th century, the name of the town was "Fort Pueblo." The Colorado Gold Rush during the year 1859, led to the settlement of four towns, that ultimately amalgamated to become Pueblo. Pueblo was the site of one of the most catastrophic floods in the history of the country. The Great Flood of the year 1912 is amongst Colorado's most well known natural disasters. A lot of people died and Pueblo sustained millions of dollars in damage. The Historic Arkansas River Project (HARP) features displays and information about the Pueblo Flood.
The 20th century ushered in the era of steel, and Pueblo's economy relied a lot on production of steel. More recently, the city of Pueblo has created a revitalized downtown and an industrial park in an effort to diversify. Numerous electronics and aviation companies are currently situated here. The main employment sectors within Pueblo are government, education, healthcare, construction and the leisure and hospitality. Service jobs provide over 80% of employment. A lot of residents are still working in steel fabrication. Newer sources of jobs include telemarketing call centers, manufacturing, electronics and aviation businesses. Many Pueblo residents commute to the Colorado Springs region for work.
The biggest healthcare employers in the Pueblo area are St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, Parkview Medical Center, and Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo. Other major employers include Pueblo County, the school system of Pueblo, Convergys Corporation, Trane, Rocky Mountain Steel Mills and Walmart.
