 Forklift Masts Yakima - Yakima is a city within Washington State, United States. Nearby is Mount Rainier National Park and Snoqualmie National Forest. Yakima serves as the county seat of Yakima County. Yakima has a population of 91,196, making it the 8th most densely inhabited city within the state. The metropolitan area has a population of 243,231.
The unincorporated suburban areas of Terrace Heights and West Valley are all located within the Yakima Valley and are considered part of Greater Yakima. The valley is a fertile area which can produce amongst the best apples within the globe. The valley is a major wine- and hops-producing region. Around 75% of all hops grown within the nation are grown around Yakima City.
South and southeast of Yakima lies the Yakama Indian Reservation. The Yakama people first inhabited the valley. Explorers Lewis and Clark arrived within the region in 1805. Their reports of abundant wildlife and fertile soil encouraged homesteaders to reside here. In the year 1847, a Catholic Mission was built within southwest of present-day Yakima. Conflicts between the settlers and the people of Yakima escalated into the Yakama Indian War of 1855. In response, the U.S. Army established a fort in 1856 near the existing site of White Swan. The Yakamas were defeated by the army and the Yakama Indian Reservation was created.
Agriculture has traditionally been the economic foundation of Yakima City. Abundant fruit crops, such as pears, peaches, apples, cherries and melons, are grown within the valley. Vegetables, like for instance peppers, corn and beans, grow well here. A lot of workers who came to market, pick and process the agricultural produce of the valley stayed to become inhabitants. Agriculture and agricultural support services provide a significant number of jobs.
Downtown Yakima has changed considerably since the latter part of the 1990s. The retail core of the area has shifted from downtown Yakima to Union Gap, a city that lies to the south of Yakima within Yakima County. Yakima's department stores and a shopping mall have been replaced with numerous hotels and call centers. Union Gap is where people go to shop now, in huge big-box stores. Yakima plans to revive its downtown area with places for entertainment, and a more personal kind of shopping experience.
