 Forklift Masts Lowell - The city of Lowell, Massachusetts is located in the county of Middlesex. Now, the population of the city is just more than 105,000 people based on the most recent census figures. The city of Lowell is Massachusetts' 4th largest city. It is known as being the birthplace of the industrial revolution within the country. A lot of the historic locations in the city have been preserved by the National Park Service. Both the cities of Cambridge and Lowell are the county seats of Middlesex County.
Lowell was established at the start of the 1820s and incorporated as a township during 1826. Ten years after that, Lowell graduated to city status. The area was based on the vision of a planned industrial community that was constructed around the natural power derived from the Merrimack River.
The city derived its name from Francis Cabot Lowell, a well-known industrialist who played a major role in the development of the power system and canal within the region. He was also significant in the massive mill complex that grew around the city of Lowell, eventually making the city amongst New England's biggest cities and one of the biggest industrial centers within America.
During the 19th century, the industrial boom helped to bring much economic change within the city of Lowell which lasted well into the 20th century. During the 1980's, Lowell was at the forefront of the technological boom. Many companies started making plastics, minicomputers, together with computer workstations. The city gained prominence becoming the international headquarters and home of Wang Laboratories, that was amongst the main players of the minicomputer industry.
The market changed considerably in the 1990s, because of the arrival of microprocessors and personal computers, the city of Lowell saw a major decline throughout the decade and a steady decline in its economic power. Now, Lowell is enjoying an upswing once again. It is fueled by a revival of the technology in the region, along with the growth of new service businesses. These new revitalizations to the economy in Lowell have brought a fresh new depth to the culture of Lowell City, along with more ethnicity.
Statistics report that about 25 percent of the employees within the city of Lowell are working in the service sector. Popular industries consist of: tourism, trade, research, electronics, transportation and healthcare. Additionally, Lowell has a diversified industrial sector along with many small companies.
Some of the jobs are made by companies making items like threads, textiles, textile machinery and yarns, electronic publishing and printing, and computer software and hardware. Lowell is home to certain popular businesses like Raytheon, NYNEX, Coca-Cola and M/A Corn.
The Merrimack Repertory Theatre is an award-winning theatre company that provides different dramatic productions for theatre enthusiasts to enjoy. Each and every month of July, a popular 3 day event known as the Lowell Folk Festival takes place. This is the biggest festival of its kind. Drawing many individuals to a celebration of folk entertainment and conventional music, it is the premier cultural event within the city. There are 6 outdoor stages with a lot of fantastic entertainment. The Boarding House Park's Summer Music Festival is one more concert event held one summer evening. It features a huge mix of entertainment such as contemporary bluegrass, folk, pop, big band and Irish music.
