 Forklift Masts Honolulu - The capital city of Hawaii and the states most populous city is Honolulu. It is likewise the most southern major city in the states. "Honolulu" refers to the urban zone located on island of Oahu southeastern shore. In the Hawaiian language, the word Honolulu means "sheltered bay" or "place of shelter". Since 1845, the city has been the capital of the Hawaiian Islands. In the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, near the city on December 7, the year 1941, the city gained historical recognition.
The government of the city and county have recently been consolidated into the County and City of Honolulu. The consolidated government covers the whole island. At the time of the 2000 Census, the population of the urban section of the city of Honolulu, which is considered to be the census-designated place by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes, was 377,357. Honolulu is a major financial center of the islands of the Pacific Ocean. During the 2010 Census, the population of the city and the county was 953,207. Relative to state population, Honolulu is the most densely inhabited state capital.
The first settlements of the city of Honolulu appear to be Polynesian migrants who have been shown to be the original settlers of the island through numerous accounts of oral histories and artifacts. These records show that as early as the 11th century, there was a settlement where the city of Honolulu is presently situated. In 1804, in the Battle of Nu'uanu at Nu'uanu Pali, after Oahu was conquered by Kamehameha I; he moved his royal court from Hawaii Island to Waiki-ki island. In 1809, his court relocated to what is presently considered to be downtown Honolulu. In the year 1812, the capital was moved back to Kailua-Kona.
There are various landmarks and museums built to be able to celebrate the island's rich history, making Honolulu the cultural center of the state. The Lolani Palace and the King Kamehameha statue situated within downtown, honor the royalty of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The Polynesian Cultural Center in close proximity to Brigham Young University, situated outside of the city provides an outdoor representation of villages from the state of Hawaii, New Zealand, Tahiti and Fiji together with other cultures of the Pacific. There are Hula dancing, native dancers and interactive demonstrations performed. Two events are held every year during the months of June and July.
Bishop Museum is another famous Honolulu location, sitting just north of downtown. It offers an insight into the rich history with costumes, live performances, canoes and documents.
The economy of Honolulu is powered by the defense contracting industry, the military and tourism, as well as research and development and manufacturing. Normally, tourism introduces around 10 billion dollars every year to the city of Honolulu. Other significant economic factors are provided by agriculture and aqua-culture. The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, the Marine Base Kaneohe and the Schofield Barracks are other contributing factors to the economy.
