At first, the city's name was Charles Towne in 1670 named after England's King Charles II. In 1680, the town moved to Oyster Point, its present location, from Albemarle Point on Ashley River's west bank. The new name of "Charleston," was adopted in 1783. These are three of the most significant Colonial structures within the country.
The very first shots of the Civil War were fired within Fort Sumter, a place Charleston is home to. The city of Charleston is also home to Fort Moultrie that was an important spot during the Revolutionary War as it was the location of a critical British defeat. Across the river within neighboring Mount Pleasant, Patriot's Point is situated. It is home to several naval vessels including the USS Yorktown.

The city likewise houses the Postal Museum, the American Military Museum, Edisto Island Museum, Summerville Dorchester Museum, Shem Creek Maritime Museum, the Confederate Museum, and the Citadel Museum.
