During the Second World War, the economy of the city was supported mainly by shipbuilding and various industrial companies. As time passed, the city be a major port, shipping well over 26 million tons of cargo per year, nearly all being the petroleum and oil variety. A major oil refinery, run by Chevron USA, is located within the city and has a capacity of fifteen million barrels.

The Social Security Administration, which employs more than one thousand people, and the Kaiser Pemanente's Richmond Medical Center Hospital, situated within the downtown area are a coupe of the largest businesses within the city. Treeskunk Production, a video game animation studio, and the Bay View recording studio are also located within the downtown. Galaxy Desserts is likewise operated and run in Richmond.

Vetrazzo is a green business located within the previous Ford Assembly Plant which takes recycled beer bottles and old traffic lights and makes beautiful glass countertops. It has won several awards for its green initiatives.
