The original residents of the area were the Huaco Indians, that is where the name of the city came from. The city of Waco began as a small village which didn't begin to look like a city until 1849, when the very first streets where laid out by a surveyor named George B. Erath. The city of Waco was incorporated during the year 1856 and quickly developed into a busy railroad community. By the 1870's several railroad lines were established making the city of Waco a center of commerce for Texas state. During the year 1886, Baylor University merged with Waco University after relocating from Independence to Waco City. By the 1900's, Waco City had become amongst the largest cotton producers within the globe.

The city was the site of a deadly shootout in the year 1993, which claimed ten lives. Of the ten deaths, 6 were members of the Branch Davidian cult and the other 4 were agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The Davidian compound in Mt. Carmel was destroyed by a fire resulting from the 51-day standoff that ensued directly following the shooting.

Waco's Cameron Park is among the largest municipal parks within the state of Texas and has some major places used for canoeing, picnicking and hiking. Animal lovers are attracted to Cameron Park Zoo, which is a huge natural-habitat zoo which houses several dozens of species from around the globe. In the center of downtown is RiverSquare Center which is an assortment of restored warehouses, some of which date back to the early nineteen hundreds, which have been turned into shopping, restaurants and bars. Among the other exciting attractions that can be found in Waco are the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, which has some interactive exhibits covering all types of sports; Art Center Waco, which entertains kids of various ages with hands-on activities; and the Dr. Pepper Museum, which comprises a mock-up of the original drug store when the drink was first invented. Also situated in the city is the Mayborn Museum Complex, the Armstrong Browning Library, Lake Waco, Homestead Heritage, Ranger Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, masonic Grand Lodge, Texas Ranger hall of Fame and Museum, and the Waco Suspension Bridge.

A semi-pro football team, the Waco Thunder is housed in the city of Waco. They are amongst 32 teams which compete in the Texas United Football League. The Waco Wranglers, a professional minor league basketball team, are also among the cities sports team. As part of the American Basketball Association in 2006-2007, the Waco Wranglers played their first season and joined the United Basketball Association during 2008.
