The area was first settled by Nancy and Noah Tevis in 1824. They built a farm on the west bank of the Neches River. A small community started to grow around the farm and was eventually named Neches River or Tevis Bluff Settlement. Joseph P. Pulsifer, Thomas B. Huling and Henry Millard bought the small community together with the nearby community of Santa Anna in 1835 with the objective of planning a town. It was named after Mary Dewburleigh Barlace Warren Beaumont, the late wife of Henry Millard, who passed away in the year 1834.

Lamar University is located in Beaumont City and presently hosts around 15,000 students. The Beaumont Enterprise is the city's daily newspaper, and The Examiner is published once a week.

The Beaumont Port represents a significant part of the economy. The port is the second biggest military seaport within the world and is now the biggest seaport by Tonnage. Stationed at the port are both the 596th Transportation Group and the 842nd Transportation Battalion.

In Beaumont City, there are several companies which have their headquarters here. Jason's Deli and Conn's Appliances are presently some of the largest. The Sweet Leaf Tea Company headquarters was originally situated within the city of Beaumont but relocated to Austin in October the year 2003. Until it's absorption by Entergy Corporation in 1993, Gulf States Utilities likewise had its headquarters there. GSU's Edison Plaza remains the tallest building within Beaumont City.

Ever since the year 1907, Beaumont City has hosted the South Texas State fair and has just relocated this exhibition to a new location in Ford Park.
