Forklift Masts Helena - The city of Helena (population 28,180) is Montana's state capital. It serves as the county seat of Lewis and Clark County, that has a population of around 63,400. The discovery of gold during 1864 within a gulch off the Prickly Pear valley led to the founding of a camp called "Last Chance" by a group of gold prospectors, the Four Georgians. The population quickly grew to over 200 and during the fall of the year 1846 a group of local men met to build a proper township, including the election of commissioners and the layout of the streets. The committee eventually settled on a new name, Helena. Helena has an historic downtown district with street names that evoke the gold rush period, such as "Last Chance Gulch", the name of the main street.
