Minneapolis is the 48th largest in the United States and is the biggest city in Minnesota State. The name is attributed to the area's first schoolteacher. He put together the Dakota word water which is "mni" and the Greek word for city that is, "polis."
Minneapolis sits along the banks of the Mississippi River, located just north of the river's convergence together with the Minnesota River. Until the French explorers arrived about the year 1680, the Dakota Sioux were the sole residents within the area. In 1819, Fort Snelling was built by the U.S. Army. This new fort brought a huge amount growth within the region. The American government pressed the Mdewakanton band of the Dakota to sell their land and this particular deal, allowed people arriving from the east to settle there.
During 1856, the Minnesota Territorial Legislature authorized the present Minneapolis as a town on the west bank of the Mississippi. During 1867, Minneapolis was incorporated as a city. Rail service started that same year between Minneapolis and Chicago. In 1872, it eventually joined with St. Anthony's east bank.
Today, the main economy of the city is centered on finance, commerce, industry, trucking services, health care and rail services. Other important aspects of the region's economy comprised the sectors of: food processing, insurance, graphic arts, high technology, publishing and milling. Electronics, automotive products, chemical and agricultural products, machinery, plastics and precision medical instruments are some of the main components of the industrial business. At one time, Minneapolis was recognized for making farm implements.
