The city of Hampton is situated on the Hampton Roads Beltway and is home to the HRBT or also called the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel situated on Interstate 64. This bridge-tunnel serves as the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay from the eastern USA and its tributary rivers. It was initially opened during the year 1957 and was the world's first bride-tunnel. This gateway is the United States' largest ice-free harbor. The HRBT was expanded during the 1970s. Even at present, this facility is the deepest and the busiest in Virginia State.

Hampton is considered among the earliest communities within the United States, since it can trace its earliest beginning back to the early part of the 1600s. The township was a quiet trading post prior to the Civil War. In 1861, the region was part of the conflict, when the Confederate army burned the city of Hampton to the ground, trying to stop the take over of the town by the Union troops. Out of the remains left afterwards, former slaves who were under a degree of Union protection, constructed the Grand Contraband Camp. This camp was the very first self-contained African American community in the USA.

After a municipal consolidation in 1952, Hampton did receive its city status. This consolidation resulted in Hampton incorporating the boundaries of an area previously called Elizabeth City County.

Hampton is a city with lots of activities to both do and see. There are a lot of cultural, recreational and historical attractions. Like for instance, The Virginia Air & Space Center is the official visitor center for NASA's Langley Research Center. The Hampton University Museum is located on one of the oldest African-American universities within the United States. Originally, the University was the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. Their objective was to be able to educate freed black men and women and teach them skills and trades after the Civil War ended. Moreover, the location is the place where the Emancipation Proclamation was read by Lincoln and is known as Emancipation Oak.

The Hampton History Museum, situated within the downtown core, offers the city's history. There are lots of costumed interpreters their to re-enact exhibits, helping to give context and significance to the exhibits. The Museum chronicles the role of the Fort during the Civil War and is among the main attractions. It also contains the cell that imprisoned Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President.

Another downtown place is the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center. This structure was built during 1925 and served as the public library for Hampton City for over 60 years.
