 Forklift Masts Abilene - The city of Abilene, Texas is a city located next to the geographic center of the state of Texas. The city serves as the county seat for Taylor County and is considered to be "the Future Great City of West Texas". Taylor County currently has a population of just over 120,000; 115,930 of these residents reside inside the Abilene city limits. It is conveniently located near Interstate 20. Abilene was established during the month of March, 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad was finally done.
Even though Abilene is not fairly as large as some other cities located in the state of Texas, it still provides plenty of dining, lodging, cultural, and shopping opportunities. Abilene is rapidly becoming known as a regional center for distribution, commerce, transportation, education and industry.
The city of Abilene, through the years has transformed the economy from a cattle-shipping prairie township to a busy city, full of military, oil and agriculture. The extent of economic diversity that the city provides attracts many determined citizens. Abilene solicits new businesses by providing numerous opportunities and tax incentives.
In the 1980s oil bust, the city of Abilene was the very first city in Texas to create a half-cent sales tax, that helped to finance the economic development.
The city boasts various attractions, like for example: the Abilene Speedway, Mesquite Hill Motocross Park, Abilene Skate Park, the Ball Ranch and the Abilene Dragstrip. The city of Abilene also provides several unique attractions, like The Grace Museum, the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, The Center for Contemporary Arts, 12 Armored Division Memorial Museum, Prime Time family Entertainment Center, Paramount Theatre, Abilene Ballet Theatre, Cockerell Galleria and Studios, Abilene Community Bank, Abilene Community Theatre, Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, Abilene Opera Association, the Amy Graves Ryan Little Theatre and the Chorus Abilene.
Other attractions in the city limits, include the Abilene Zoo, the Dyess Visitor Center Memorial Park, the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, and Abilene State Park. In Abilene there are more than 25 parks which take up a total of about 1,246 acres.
The is a vast variety of animals housed at the Abilene Zoo, somewhere in the vicinity of several hundred animals. Throughout the year, the Zoo offers several summer courses and educational courses. They also have several special events which take place periodically. Some of the newer attractions consist of a Southern American Maned Wolf Exhibit, a cougar exhibit and a Black Rhino Exhibit. The backyard area of Elm Creek would house some animals such as otters, armadillos and skunks that have been found locally.
