They referred to site and the pole "le bāton rouge," which means "the red stick."

The location had been named "Istrouma" by the local Native Americans. Evidence has been found along the Mississippi, Amite and Comite rivers and in 3 Native American mounds that remain within the city. Archaeologists have been able to determine indigenous habitation of the area to 8000 BC. These mounds were constructed in the Middle Archaic period by gatherer-hunter societies maybe as early as 4500 BC that is long before the building of Egyptian pyramids.

The biggest trade in Baton Rouge is petrochemical production and manufacturing. The Exxon Mobil facility in the city of Baton Rouge is the 2nd largest oil refinery in the USA and is also amongst the world's ten largest. There is an abundance of pipeline, deep water, and rail and highway access within the city of Baton Rouge as well.

The Dow Chemical Company has a huge plant close to Plaquemine in Iberville Parish and Albemarle also has their head office in the city of Baton Rouge. Within North Baton Rouge, the NanYa Technology Corporation has a huge facility making CPVC and PVC pipes. Various companies such as Shaw Construction, Harmony and Turner all started by performing construction work at these facilities.
