 Forklift Masts Lubbock - The city of Lubbock is situated within northwest Texas, on the South Plains. Lubbock City has an approximate population of 215,000. The Texas Panhandle is situated north of the city with the Permian Basin situated to the south of Lubbock. The city of Lubbock is elevated above sea level at roughly 3,250 ft.
Lubbock is a name which came from the previous Texas Ranger and Civil War Confederate, Thomas S. Lubbock. Throughout this period Francis R. Lubbock, his brother, served as the governor of the state of Texas.
Lubbock County was formed during 1876, though the present-day city was not founded until 1890. The first settlement was formed from the merger of Old Lubbock and Monterey. In 1891 Lubbock City was referred to as the county seat and the city was incorporated on March 16, the year 1909.
The rail service was established soon after Lubbock was incorporated. Agriculture grew together with the expansion of the railroads. The area shortly became the marketing center of the county. For that reason they were known as the "Hub of the Plains."
As quite a few more opportunities were presented to the city it continued to grow. An important boost to the cities economy came from the opening of Texas Technological College during 1925. The impact of the Great Depression were countered by the development of two military training bases during WWII. The population of the city grew rapidly once the war ended. All through the '40's, the growth rate was only second to Albuquerque throughout the entire country.
On the 11th of May,1970, Lubbock City experienced its worst disaster in the form of a tornado. This led to 26 fatalities and has been considered amongst the strongest tornadoes in history. It led to over $135 million in damages spanning more than three square miles of the city. In addition to the repairs done on the buildings that were damaged, the Lubbock memorial Civic Center was built as a memorial to those who were victims of this devastating natural disaster.
Lubbock's economy is still based mostly on agriculture, with supplemental income which comes from different manufactured facilities. The economy of Lubbock has continued to become diversified in particular fields, which comprise government, retail trade, education, and health care. The agricultural business draws in about $22 billion dollars yearly with cotton being the main crop. Cotton is not only a marketable commodity. It also provides help in order to support related companies, like for example compresses, grins, cottonseed meal, lint, a denim plant and numerous processing plants.
