As of August the year 2011, the unemployment rate of the state was 6.6%.

New Mexico is the third largest producer of natural gas and crude oil in the US. The Permain Basin, which is part of the Mid-Continent Oil Field and the San Juan Basin, both partly lie in New Mexico. During the year 2006 New Mexico accounted for 8.5% of the dry natural gas, 10.2% of the natural gas liquids and 3.4% of the crude oil produced within the United States. During 2000 the value of gas and oil produced was $8.2 billion.

The military provides many of the federal jobs within the state of New Mexico, since there are three air force bases within New Mexico: Holloman Air Force Base, Cannon Air Force base and Kirtland Air Force Base. Also in the state are the White Sands Missile Range, and Fort Bliss: McGregor Range, which is a proving ground and maneuver range. A May 2005 estimate by New Mexico State University is that 11.65% of New Mexico's total employment arises directly or indirectly from military spending. Other federal installations consist of the technology labs of Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories.
