Forklift Masts Kent - Kent (population 118,200) is a city within the state of Washington, US. The city of Kent is a suburb of Seattle and the 3rd biggest city within King County. The population has just grown, but due mostly to annexation, not to an arrival of new inhabitants. Towns close by include Auburn, Federal Way, part of Covington to the South, unincorporated King County, Federal Way, Des Moines and Sea Tac to the west, Tukwila and Renton towards the north, and Covington towards the east. Mt. Rainier can be seen towards the southeast.
The city of Kent consists of three distinct parts: the Valley, West Hill and East Hill. The Valley is home to the cities downtown core. Kent has a total area of 73.2 km2, wherein 72.6 km2 is land and 0.6 km2 is water. The city has the second biggest warehouse district within the country. The Green River runs north through Kent on its way to Puget Sound. The East Hill area has a big lake called Lake Meridian.
The city of Kent was first called Titusville after it was established by European-Americans inhabitants during the early part of the eighteen sixties. There is still a visible "Titusville Station" sign that could be found on Gowe St. Hops were the focus of the economy within the city as much of its earnings came from the grain during the 1880s. In Europe, hops crops was destroyed by an aphid infestation, boosting the value of hops from the Puget Sound region where hops were shipped from Titusville by river or rail transportation. A local invasion of aphids finally brought at end to the production of hops in the valley. Titusville was given a different name, after the County of Kent in England. Kent was established as a city in the year 1890 with a population of 793.
Companies like REI, Oberto Sausage Company and Seattle Bicycle Supply have their headquarters within the city of Kent. Kent also has a large Boeing plant. The once-fertile valley is presently covered with various warehouses due in part to the city's part as a hub for transportation routes. The expansive warehouse district is utilized for regional distribution by businesses such as Whirlpool Corporation and general Electric Appliances.
The city of Kent has developed the Kent Station and the ancillary shopping area after its latest revitalization drive.
