South Bend is located within Indiana State, USA and is the county seat of St. Joseph County. The city was named South Bend due to its location on St. Joseph River's southernmost bend. The population of South Bend City is roughly 101,168 while the population of its Metropolitan Statistical Area is about 316,663. The population of the Combined Statistical area is 544,582. The city is considered Michiana Region's economical hub and is the 4th biggest city in Indiana State. Notre Dame, Indiana is situated just to the of the city and hosts the University of Notre Dame.
During 1865, the city of South Bend was incorporated as a city and after that developed as a highly industrialized economy. This was mainly due to certain pioneering businesses like the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company. During the 19th century, the biggest manufacturer of wagons was the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company and was one of the only businesses which were able to successful transition to manufacturing automobiles from making wagons. They had a big role on the economy of South Bend until they were shut down in 1963. Other notable companies who played a key part on the development of the city consist of Oliver Corporation, the Birdsell manufacturing Company, the Bendix Corporation, the Singer Sewing Machine Company, Honeywell, and the South Bend Toy Company.
The economy within the city of South Bend remains diverse, consisting of wholesale and retail trade, education, government and healthcarre. The biggest employer within the city is the Notre Dame University. Thus, education has a major effect on South Bend's economy. Local companies have partnered with the university to further research and development on several projects. The 2nd largest employer within South Bend is the Memorial Health System. Several other businesses that are medical-related are located in South Bend.
One more industry which plays a huge part in the economy is manufacturing. Non-electrical machinery, transportation equipment, rubber products, and plastic products are only a few of the manufacturing sectors. AM General, the company which produces special purpose and Hummer military vehicles, has its head office in South Bend. It is among the biggest employers within the city.
Very Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C and six Catholic brothers established the University of Notre Dame during 1842. Ever since then, the university has become an intrinsic part of the city's economy and culture.
Over 114 years of automotive history is housed at the Studebaker National Museum. The collection features all of the Studebaker products, varying from the family`s early Conestoga Wagon all the way to the very last car which the company produced. In 1922, the Morris Performing Arts Center was opened. It has just been renovated and is currently home to the Broadway Theatre League as well as the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. The South Bend Regional Museum of Art is situated downtown within Century Center. It was established during the year 1996 and is home to more than 850 pieces of art work from an assortment of regional artists.
