 Forklift Masts Yonkers - The city of Yonkers is situated just outside New York City and is only 2 miles north of the city of Manhattan. With a population over more than 195,000, the city of Yonkers is considered the fourth most inhabited city within New York State and is the largest within Westchester County. The most populated cities in New York State are Buffalo, Rochester and New York.
Numerous attractions are located in Yonkers, like the Hudson River Museum, the Sherwood House, the Science Barge, Cross County Shopping Center, Yonkers raceway and Ridge Hill Shopping Center. The raceway just renovated in the year 2006, adding video slot machine gambling that is legalized and revitalizing its' clubhouse and grounds. There are numerous shopping areas located all over Central Park Avenue, that is normally referred to as "Central Ave" by the people who live there.
The city's history begins when Adriaen Van der Donck received a land grant form the Dutch East India Company in the late 1640's. He built one of the very first saw mills within the region at the location where the Hudson River intersects the Nepperhan Creek. Van der Donck was affectionately referred to as Jonk Herr, that means young nobleman. Later, his land became known as "Jonk Heer's land." The phrase developed into "the Younckers" and then lastly into Yonkers. Because of it's centralized place, the city of Yonkers rapidly established itself as a major trading center. During the early history of Yonkers it was mostly an agricultural community, but it's waterfront location soon led to innovations in travel, that in turn accelerated the establishment of different industries all over Yonkers. There are some times during history where the city of Yonkers played a main role in carpet and hat manufacturing. As well, it was the location of the world's very first elevated mass transit system. The city was first incorporated during the year 1872 with a population of about 20,000.
The city of Yonkers has just put forth a proposal to revitalize the locality, with over $3 billion dollars worth of changes. The proposal promises to add waterfront development, luxury housing, and a lot of commercial and retail space. The objective is to increase tourism and the economic significance of the city to the county and New York State.
There are quite a few annual events that attract thousands of individuals to the city every year. The Yonkers Hudson Riverfest, that offers a diverse selection of crafts, entertainment and ethnic foods, attracts a crowd of over 15,000 individuals. The Untermyer Performing Arts Festival performs every Saturday night throughout the summer. The events, which include dance, opera, music and street theatre, are free of charge and are held on the Hudson River. Also, the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra plays five times each and every year.
