A lot of these people were employed at the city's blast furnaces and steel mills giving the city a competitive advantage over other industrial cities within the Midwest and Northwest.
The states largest company is the University of Alabama at Birmingham or likewise referred to as UAB. The university performs medical research and biotechnology, which are key economic factors for the city of Birmingham. Several of the other bigger businesses comprise the Jefferson County Public Schools, the U.S. Government, Bell South County Public Schools and Baptist Medical Centers.
The city itself is really among the biggest banking centers in the United States. Steel processing and production continue to play a vital part in the local economy. A lot of the top steel makers in the US have operations within the city of Birmingham. There are also several insurance companies located here. The Birmingham Museum of Art is the largest art museum within the Southwest. The city of Birmingham is likewise home to Alabama's major opera, ballet and symphony orchestra including the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Alabama Ballet, Opera Birmingham and Birmingham Concert Chorale.
The city hosts lots of cultural festivals such as film events, music and regional heritage. There are screenings concentrated at the Alabama Theatre throughout the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. This gala brings filmmakers from across the world in order to have their films judged and viewed. Typically, this festival happens in the last weekend during the month of September at 8 venues around the downtown core. The Taste of 4th Annual Jazz Festival is another well known music festival that is celebrated at the end of September each year. This event coincides with the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. This all day festival features national and local jazz acts. There were around 6000 individuals that came to the 2007 festival. One more annual event which has been held since 2006 is the Birmingham Folk Festival. In 2008, this event moved to the Avondale Park. The festival featured 3 touring "headliner bands" along with 9 local bands in the year 2009.
