Originally, the land where Syracuse sits was occupied by the Onondaga Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Iroquois had an alliance along with the British, causing them to drive out the first French traders and missionaries who arrived. Amongst the essential historical events include the unearthing of salt in the mines nearby, the post-war granting of land to the Continental Army ex-officers, and the completion of the Erie Canal, which happened in 1825.
Over the last few decades the economy in the city of Syracuse has suffered as some industrial jobs have left the area. In addition, state and local government jobs are also on the decline. The most important employers that remain in the city are mainly in education and the service industries. Due to the recent expansions by Syracuse University and Upstate Medical University and the development of numerous small medical office complexes, the University Hill neighborhood is expanding.
Within Syracuse, is a division of Time Warner Cable, in addition to a Bristol-Myers Squibb complex near the district of Eastwood. The company was founded by Hamilton College graduates.
There are very few big employers in Syracuse. The majority of the employers of Syracuse are small, that allows for a some level of stability. Amongst the top eleven companies in Syracuse, eight are involved in the education or service industry. These businesses have a tendency to be more stable compared to the manufacturing businesses.
The Opera Chorus of the Syracuse was initially established in 1963. It wasn't until ten years later during the year 1973 that this company became private, changing its name to the Syracuse Opera Company. As a general rule, the Syracuse Opera Company performs three full operas on an annual basis. There are several performances that are free held on a yearly basis in Armory Square and Thornden Park, along with several other locations. The annual budget for the company is US $1 million. The Syracuse Opera Company is the only professional company situated in upstate New York.
In 2002 the Syracuse Shakespeare Festival was established. It is a not-for-profit, charitable business that strives to display the beauty of the works of William Shakespeare. It is well-known for its annual Shakespeare-in-the-Park program at Thornden Park Amphitheater, that is provided free of charge. Ever since its start, the Syracuse Shakespeare Festival has drawn more than 17,000 people. There are three other major programs which SSF produces: Kids Doing Shakespeare, Avon Repertory Theatre and Shakespeare-Under-A-Roof.
