Forklift Masts Thornton - The city of Thornton is located within Colorado, United States and is a member of both the Adams and Weld counties. It is a suburb of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Around 10 miles southwest of the city of Thornton lies the city of Denver, the state's capital. The population was recorded by the United States Census Bureau as being roughly 118,770 on the 1st of April, the year 2010. This is about 44% increase from the 2000 census, where the population was 82,384. The city of Thornton is the 6th most populous city within Colorado and the 213th most populated city in the United States.
Until the year 1953, Thornton was just a farmland. Sam Hoffman changed that when he bought a plot of land approximately seven miles north of Denver and laid out a completely planned community. It was the very first of its kind within the County of Adams, as well as the first that provided full municipal services off a single tax levy. The name of the city was selected to honor Dan Thornton, Former Colorado Governor.
The Thornton community Association (or also known as TCS) was formed to help guide the community through its growth. There were nearly 5,500 people resided within Thornton in about 1,200 homes during 1955. During 1956 the city of Thornton was incorporated, due largely in part to the TCA. The very first mayor of the city was a City Council candidate, G. Leary. Brian Thornton, is not related to the Governor.
There are more than 80 parks located throughout the city and about 2,000 acres of land dedicated to open spaces and parks. There are some trails running all over the city of Thornton. Combined together they stretch more than 80 miles. There are numerous recreational complexes in Thornton, like for instance the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center and the Thornton Community Center. There are also three main golf courses in the city of Thornton: Riverdale Knolls Golf Course, Thorncreek Golf Course and Heritage Todd Creek Golf Club.
Denver is home to a lot of historic sites like for instance the Colorado State Capitol, the Colorado Governor's Mansion, and the Denver mint. There is also the Forney Museum of Transportation, which features a variety of antique carriages, automobiles, trains and bicycles. A few of the other nearby attractions comprise Park Hill Golf Park, Denver Zoo and Grasmer Lake and Holly Park. During September, the city hosts the Harvest Fest and during the month of December, the Winterfest.
