Spokane started as a trading post in 1810 with the establishment of the North West Company's Spokane House. The settlement was the center of the fur trade between the Cascades and the Rockies. The economic development of Spokane varies from clean technology and aerospace to digital media and information technology. The manufacturing sector concentrates on metal fabrication and refinery, finished wood products and food processing. The healthcare business plays a growing part in the economy of the city. A lot of companies are located here, like for instance the Fortune 1000 Potlatch Corporation. Various breweries, farms and wineries are located in the area.
Spokane puts on lots of local celebrations, events and festivals, throughout the year. Many tourists come from the surrounding areas to enjoy festivals like for example the Lilac Bloomsday Run, that is the largest timed roadrace in the whole globe. Spectators number in the tens of thousands. Every February, the Spokane International Film Festival showcases independent films from around the globe. During June, the biggest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the globe takes place within Spokane. Called Hoopfest, this particular tournament draws participants of various ages.
