It was during the Oklahoma Land Rush in 1889 that the city was established. Two years after that, the city of Norman was incorporated. The largest university in the state of Oklahoma is situated in the city of Norman, that has helped to develop the cities technological and scientific research industries. The University of Oklahoma has a student population of approximately 30,000, and a labor force of practically 11,000. The research programs of the campus contributed over $277 million to the economy of Norman in 2009.
With the Louisiana Purchase during 1803, the central Oklahoma area became part of the US. The Creek Nation was moved to the region currently known as Norman by the United States Government in 1832-1833. Creek Nation was one of five Native American tribes which the United States officially recognized via treaty. Before the American Civil War the US government started relocating the tribes to Oklahoma.
Norman is the place of the National Weather Center, comprising some climate-and-weather-related organizations. The center is a collaborative effort between the University of Oklahoma and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Norman is a prime place for a planned National Weather Museum. The public and academic weather research activities within the city of Norman have drawn several private meteorological businesses, like for example Vieux and Associates, Inc., Weathernews Americas, Inc., Computational Geosciences, Inc., Weather Decision Technologies and WeatherBank, Inc.
Several other public and private scientific ventures are situated within Norman. The renewable energy sector includes the Oklahoma Renewable Energy Council and the Oklahoma Geological Survey. Bergey Windpower provides small wind turbines and SouthWest NanoTechnologies manufactures carbon nanotubes.
Other industries that contribute to the local economy comprises Norman public schools, the Griffin memorial Hospital and the Norman Regional health System. Major companies consist of Hitachi, AT&T, Astellas Pharma Technologies, Albon Engineering, RiskMetrics Group, Xyant Technology, Sysco Corporation, Office Max National Sales Center and SITEL.
