The geography of Missouri is highly varied. As of the year 2001, there were 108,000 farms, the next largest number in whatever state after Texas. Missouri actively promotes its rapidly growing wine industry.

There are large quantities of limestone within Missouri, together with the other resources which are mined, comprising: coal, crushed stone and lead. Lead production within the state of Missouri leads all other US states. Nearly all of the mines producing lead are situated in Missouri's central eastern area. The state of Missouri also ranks first or near first in lime production, a key component in Portland cement.
