 Forklift Masts Kansas City - The city of Kansas City, Missouri is the largest city within the state of Missouri. It is the main city within the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and is usually called "KC". The city of Kansas serves as the county seat of Jackson County even if it covers more than 820 square km in the counties of Clay, Jackson, Platte and Cass. Kansas City has a population of approximately 459,800. The larger metropolitan area has 2.1 million people.
KC is located at the confluence of the Kansas River and the Missouri River. It is also opposite Kansas City, Kansas. At first, it was founded as a township in 1838 and later incorporated in 1850 as a city. KC was the site of the Battle of Westport and several other Civil War battles. Kansas City played a vital role in the history of jazz and blues.
The first European to visit the region and explore the lower Missouri River was Etienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont. At the time, he served as a commander at the French's Fort Detroit. He left his post after being criticized for his handling of Native American affairs. A deserter, he evaded authorities, became a fur trader and took a Native American wife.
The Greater Kansas region is home to numerous Fortune 500 companies like for example Hallmark Cards. Also within Kansas City are the headquarters of YRC Worldwide Inc., Sprint Nextel Corporation, International Assets Holding Corporation and H&R Block. Other corporations located there include Aquila, Great Plains Energy, Applebee's, AMC Theatres, Cerner, DST Systems, Garmin International and Russell Stover Candies. Three international law businesses are also based in the city of Kansas.
Agriculture is vital to the Kansas City economy. Kansas City is home to the largest co-op in the country, Dairy farmers of America.
A number of lakes are situated in the general vicinity of Kansas City, providing recreational opportunities, like for instance swimming, fishing, boating and camping. Popular spots are Lewis and Clark Lake, approximately 45 minutes north of Kansas City, and Big Lake State Park, further north. Stockton Lake at Stockton State Park is known for scuba diving and is located 160 km southeast of the city.
