The state shares its borders with six other states: Missouri to the north, Tennessee and Mississippi towards the east, the state of Louisiana towards the south, the state of Texas within the southwest, Oklahoma towards the west, and Mississippi River on a large part of the eastern border. Numerous international businesses are headquartered within the northwest corner of Arkansas, such as Wal-Mart, J.B. Hunt and Tyson Foods. This area of Arkansas has experienced an economic boom ever since the 1970s as a result.
In recent years, automobile components manufacturers have opened factories in eastern Arkansas to support auto plants in various states.
Tourism within the state of Arkansas is very vital to the economy of Arkansas. called "The Natural State," the moniker was created to be able to kickstart state tourism in the 1970s, and the name has stuck to this day.

The peak of catfish farming within the state of Arkansas was in the year 2002, when 38,000 acres (150 km2) were under farming. During the year 2007, the state's catfish producers generated sales of $71.5 million, 16 percent of the whole U.S. market. Arkansas was the first state to develop commercial catfish farms in the late 1950s. The number of catfish farms in the state of Arkansas grew through the 1990s as farmers entered the catfish industry as a way to provide additional income in a time of low prices for cotton and soybeans. Banks loaned money to be able to support what they think as a steady source of revenue.
