The region is currently called Hamilton but was named Fairfield back in 1794. During that year, Fort Hamilton was built there. In 1810, the city of Hamilton was incorporated, but 5 years afterward lost its status after failing to hold elections. In 1827 the community was reincorporated and in the year 1857 it became a city. German immigrants were attracted to the city and influenced its culture, particularly its food and architecture. Paper production and iron works were two main industries which boomed in the city from the early to mid-20th century.

In the year 1913, much of the city of Hamilton was damaged during the Great Dayton Flood. The town later was called "Little Chicago" since a lot of Chicago gangsters purchased homes in the city. In the second World War, Hamilton factories made supplies for the war. Then again, military personnel were forbidden to enter the city on account of the numerous prostitution and gambling establishments that had taken root there.

Now Hamilton residents and visitors benefit from the city's various parks. Outdoor activities happen in Joyce Park, Miami Woods, Sanders Park, Milkin Woods and Crawford Woods. Individuals could usually be seen walking and bicycling on the picturesque paved paths along the Great Miami River banks. There are numerous excellent golf courses in the area. The local ice rink is busy in winter months with hockey and skating.

Residents usually head to nearby Cincinnati for cultural activities and professional sports events. Also accessible for Hamilton families is the Kings Island amusement and recreational center and the Beach Waterpark. There is also a forest park situated within Campbell Gard on the Great Miami River.
