The town's population has increased through the past decade, increasing by 43%. It has grown from 94,536 people in 2000 to roughly 135,200 by 2010. Cary is among the fastest growing municipalities in the United States. It is the largest town and seventh largest municipality in North Carolina.

The region is referred to as "The Triangle" because of the Research Triangle Park (RTP) created there during 1959. Three major research universities - NC State University, Duke University, and UNC-Chapel Hill - are situated within The Triangle. The cities of Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh make up the three most important research cities of RTP. The Triangle is bordered on three sides by Durham City and is halfway between Chapel Hill and Raleigh Cities. The city of Cary is located beside The Triangle in the Piedmont region. The north and west edges of the town are bordered by RTP.

To the west of Cary is the Jordan Lake area. The town is mountainous and has a humid subtropical type of weather. Summertimes are warm with temperatures reaching more than one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Wintertimes are mild with an average of seven inches of snow. The town has a total area of 43.5 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau.

The city of Cary was first established during 1750, when it was initially known as Bradford's Ordinary. The area became a main transportation route, after the North Carolina Railroad arrived in the mid 1800s. The first settlers were Allison Francis Page and his wife, Catherine Raboteau Page. A lumberman and farmer from Wake County, Page bought land during 1854 and called it Cary in honor of the previous prohibitionist and congressman of Ohio, Samuel Fenton Cary. When the town was officially incorporated in the year 1871, Page was chosen its very first mayor.

Used for outdoor recreation; the city of Cary has many parks, comprising MacDonald Woods Park, Sears Farm Road Park, Annie L. Jones Park, Fred G. Bond Metro park and White Oaks Park. The Hemlock Bluffs State Natural Area is a well-known destination area. Hoffman Lake, MacGregor Downs Lake and Holiday Acres Lake are fantastic places for fishing and water sports. Each and every year the Town of Cary hosts various festivals and events like Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival, Martin Luther King Jr. Dreamfest and Art Quilt Show.
