Fargo was once a popular stop for steamboats on the Red River. When the city was founded during 1871, it was called "Centralia." Its later name, "Fargo," honored William Fargo who founded the Wells Fargo Express Company and served as director of Northern Pacific Railway. The Railway brought success to the town, that was referred to as the "Gateway to the West".

Agriculture was until more recently, a key economic industry in the City of Fargo. These days, the city of Fargo is more heavily dependent upon manufacturing, food processing, technology, retail, healthcare and education. The most significant companies within the city comprise Sanford Health, Innovis Health, Microsoft, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Swanson Health Products and Case New Holland. North Dakota State University is situated in the city and is the largest provider of public sector jobs. The City of Fargo is considered by Forbes Magazine to be the 7th best small city within the nation for starting a career or establishing a business.

With three universities within the region, Fargo boasts an abundance of cultural events. The universities host and produce lots of theatrical events, and productions are also staged by Theater 'B', Fargo-Moorhead Community Theater, Ursa Major Productions, Music Theater Fargo Moorhead, Tin Roof Theater Company and more. Musical events are never in short supply, due to the Fargo-Moorhead Opera, the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra and the Jazz Arts Group. The company Fargo-Moorhead Ballet produces dance events.

The Fargo Theater, is a 1926 Art Deco movie house which hosts first-run movies and film festivals. At the Fargodome, residents and visitors can enjoy Broadway musicals, concerts, dance, sports, and other public spectacles. A key local festival is the Winter Carnival, which has been held within Fargo ever since 1928.
