Forklift Masts Athens - Athens-Clarke County is a consolidated city-county located in the State of Georgia. Athens is located in the northeastern portion of the state of Georgia. It consists of the former City of Athens proper, that is the county seat and Clarke County also.

Athens is a college town that is heavily dependent upon the University of Georgia, which has been mainly responsible for the cities first development. The original city decided to abandon its charter in 1991, in an effort to form the unified government with neighboring Clarke County. The new area was known collectively as Athens-Clarke County. According to the 2010 Census, the consolidated city county had a complete population of approximately 115,452. This combined population consisted of all of Athens-Clarke County less a part of Bogart and Winterville.

At first, Athens was no more than a trading settlement on the Oconee River banks. During the latter part of the seventeen hundreds the region was called Cedar Shoals. On the 27th of January, 1785, the Georgia General Assembly chartered the University of Georgia as the first chartered state-supported university. Abraham Baldwin drafted the charter which existed only on paper for sixteen years.

During the summer of the year 1801, a delegation of 5 men: John Milledge, Hugh Lawson, Baldwin, John Twiggs and George Walton traveled to was referred to as Jackson County to choose a location for the future university and also secure a contract for its construction. Collectively, the delegation agreed on the location of the property on the hill above the Oconee River and Cedar Shoals. On July 25, the year 1801, Daniel Easley sold six hundred thirty three acres to Milledge and then donated it to the university. The land was named Athens to honor the Greek city that was the center of learning and culture during ancient times.

Around 125 square miles make up the Athens-Clarke County. Out of Georgia's 159 counties, this one has the smallest land area. Among the highest points in Athens is designated by City Hall within the downtown core. It is located roughly 761 feet above sea level. Athens-Clarke County was the 25th county established in the state of Georgia. It is roughly sixty five miles northeast of the city of Atlanta.

Other major factors for the economy include the production of items such as textiles, electrical components, transportation equipment, apparel, and industrial machinery.
